Why use solids control equipment in drilling mud treatment

The drilling mud purification solid control equipment is mainly used to control the solid phase content in the drilling mud. The drilling mud circulation system must be equipped with a drilling mud purification device. The increase of solid content in drilling mud will significantly reduce the ROP, and even lead to drilling accidents, which will greatly increase the total drilling cost. Experiments have shown that for every 1% decrease in solid phase content, the ROP can be increased by at least 10%, and the smaller the particles, the greater the impact on the ROP.

The role of solid control equipment:

The effect of solid phase content of drilling fluid on drilling rate:

1. The ROP decreases with the increase of the solid phase content. If the ROP is 100% in clear water, the solid phase content increases to 7%, and the ROP decreases to 50%, which is half of the ROP in clear water. According to a large number of statistical data, if the solid content is within 7%, the drilling speed can be increased by at least 10% for every 1% decrease.

2. In different solid content ranges, the drilling speed increases with the decrease of solid content. When the solid content of the drilling fluid is below 7% (equivalent to a density of 1.08 g/cm3), the drilling rate increases rapidly; when it exceeds 7%, reducing the solid content has no obvious effect on improving drilling.

3. The colloidal particles with a particle size of less than 1 µm in the drilling fluid have a great influence on the ROP. According to the experiment, the colloidal particles with a particle size of less than 1 µm have a 12 times greater impact on the ROP than the coarse particles with a particle size larger than I cape. Therefore, the more colloidal particles with a particle size of less than 1 µm in the drilling fluid, the greater the decrease in ROP.

Therefore, it is necessary to use solid control equipment to remove harmful solid phases such as cuttings, sand and inferior clay in the drilling fluid in time, so that the content of useful solid phases such as bentonite and barite in the drilling fluid is maintained within the required range of separation of bentonite and barite.
